Every year we hear requests from Academy students to add more dance and songwriting classes. For the past few years, we have incorporated popular elective sessions on these subjects. Starting in 2009, we are expanding these offerings into full-time classes. Register for either of these classes now in the online lottery thru November 18.
Traditional Dance
The traditional dance class will be led by Eileen Carson Schatz, founder of the Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble. Preliminary daily schedule (subject to change):
- 9:30-10:30 Instructor Performances (Join Academy instrument students in the Wildflower Pavilion)
- 10:30-12:30 Southern Exposure
- 12:30-2:00 Lunch Break
- 2:00- 3:45 Leapin' In Lyons
This class includes games, activities, and simple moves that anyone can do and is designed to get you dancing for the sheer fun of it. We will explore music, improv exercises, and the RockyGrass environment as inspirations to express ourselves through movement. The class is designed for anyone at any level of dance experience, including musicians and folks who have never danced before. Each day will build upon skills from earlier sessions.
- 4:00-5:00 Electives (Join Academy instrument students for a wide-variety of music electives)
Come and learn some Southern Appalachian clogging and hamboning taught
at a beginner to intermediate level. The class will cover the fundamentals of clogging and will include careful breakdowns of the moves, drills to improve skill, and some step combinations, all taught at a comfortable pace in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Instruction in hamboning (body percussion) will also be included everyday, from specific rhythm sequences to improvising. Each will build upon skills from earlier sessions.
Songwriting & Vocals
The Songwriting and Vocal class will present both songwriting and vocal techniques for all participants. Students are encouraged to compose songs with lyrics and music, arrange songs for lead and harmony vocals and perform the songs by the end of the week. There will be two group sessions per day, mentoring time and electives offered during the week. The schedule for the week is as follows:
- 9:30 - 10:15 Instructor Band Performances
- 10:30- 12:30 Songwriting and Vocals with Steve Spurgin
- 12:30 - 2:00 Lunch
- 2:00 - 3:45 Songwriting and Vocals with Claire Lynch
- 4:00 - 5:00 Electives

Be a part of the first year of these two new classes. The online lottery for registration is open now thru November 10-18. Share your thoughts on these and other Academy classes in the Festivarian Forum.
