12:00pm – On-site campground opens
Please note that vehicles will be lining up at the Olson Property this year - down 2nd Avenue toward the high school, next to Bohn Park. Follow the signs in town. Overnight camping/sleeping in vehicles is illegal on the streets in Lyons.
2:00-5:00pm – Mandolin Building Session
All mandolin, mandola and octave mandolin building students meet in the shop for orientation and kit selection. Please be there on time and pick up your goodie bags after 5:30pm.
1:30-5:30pm – Academy check-in

9:30am – Orientation - Wildflower Pavilion - Be Here Now!
We’ll run through the schedule, cover logistics, answer questions, and prepare you for the week. We’ll also have coffee, tea, water, and muffins out at 8:00 AM each morning to help you start your day. Burritos, OJ and espresso drinks are also available on-site along side the bathhouse.
9:45-10:45am – Opening Jam Session
Welcome to our introductory all group session. We’ll start off with an impromptu song, take a few questions and then work up an arrangement to a bluegrass classic exploring the instrumentation, the lead and backup parts and lead and harmony vocal arrangements. Then we’ll all learn the vocal parts together and warm up our voices before we head out to our song sessions. (Wildflower Pavilion)
10:45-12:30pm – Song Sessions
Now that you’ve learned your vocal parts, in the Song Sessions we’ll add the instrumentation and work up the entire song. These sessions are your chance to dig into the songbook and learn the parts to some classic bluegrass material. We’ll look at both instrumentation and vocal arrangement, and work in big and small ensembles. During these sessions, you will have the opportunity to learn from most of the Academy faculty. We offer three tracks for novice, intermediate and advanced levels (see enclosed info in Songbook) and a new vocal workshop for all levels called Sing, Sing, Sing with John Cowan. Meeting areas are listed below:

Please wander to your assigned class area for instrument instruction. Refer to your site map for tent locations as a few have changed. Each tent classroom is marked with an animal picture and name hanging from the tent. You will meet in the same place for each of these afternoon sessions as well as on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. To give you the widest range of perspectives and approaches to the music, many instructors will be rotating through the different class levels during the week. Below is a list of class locations:

During this time, we’ll explore a variety of topics; many of which we can’t cover during other class times. There will also be additional opportunities to play in an ensemble and get extra instruction on your instrument. You’re free to take part in the electives that interest you. Instrument office hours are offered to continue working on lesson material covered earlier or specific instrument questions. The slow and fast jams will include vocal work in a band setting.

Meet the Infamous Stringdusters – We’ll kick off this morning session with the Infamous Stringdusters as they perform and discuss their musical arrangements and band philosophy of making music. (Wildflower Pavilion)
One-on-ones. –Vocal, songwriting and instruments offered will vary each day. You must sign up at the Blue Heron Tent each morning at 8:30 am and meet in the designated area. One lesson per person, please. Each person will receive individual instruction in front of a small group. Each one-on-one session is limited to 4-6 people per day depending on time. Students are expected to stay for entire session. The songwriting and vocal sessions will each last 30 minutes and are available during instrument instruction times as well.
